The old Ibiza town<\/strong><\/a>, the well preserved fortress of Dalt Vila<\/strong>, has been declared Patrimony of Humanity<\/strong> in 1999 by the UNESCO<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It lies on the highest elevation of Ibiza<\/strong> town at 85 meteres above sea level, with walls, watch towers and small historical districts with the typical white-washed houses.<\/p>\n

During its history, Ibiza<\/strong> has been invaded by Phoenicians<\/strong>, Punics<\/strong>, Romans<\/strong>, Byzantines<\/strong>, Vandals<\/strong>, Arabs<\/strong> and Christians<\/strong>, due to its important strategic situation in the Mediterranean between the
\npeninsular coast and Africa, being of interest to civilizations<\/strong> and empires<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“MADINA YABISA”<\/strong> The muslims called Ibiza Madina Yabisa and occupied the city in the year 902<\/strong> after two decades of skirmish and independency, always under the pact of the Emirate of Cordoba<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

During centuries, the ibicencos had to defend themselves against pirates<\/strong> and corsairs<\/strong> and the necessity obliged them to turn into farmers, fishermen and sailors until exploiting their Phoenician roots and getting into the touristic boom of the XX century, converting itself into a prosperous and open-minded society.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The declaration<\/strong> of the World heritage Site<\/strong> was given by Unesco<\/strong> to some cultural and environmental sites of Ibiza<\/strong> and Formentera<\/strong> (the only ones in the Balearic Islands<\/strong> with this recognition) These are: the enclosure of Dalt Vila<\/strong>, the Phoenician-Punic necropolis of Es Puig des Molins, the Phoenician settlement of\u00a0Sa Caleta<\/strong> and the Posidonea prairies of the sea bottoms of Ibiza and Formentera.<\/p>\n

Dalt Vila<\/strong> is considered a good example of fortified acropolis<\/strong> and its walls constitute a unique evidence of the different cultures that passed by.\u00a0 The village of Sa Cal<\/strong>eta<\/strong><\/a> is considered the first Phoenician township<\/strong> of the island and it is of incalculable value for the study of this type of settlements and layouts.<\/p>\n

The necropolis<\/strong> of Es Puig des Molins<\/strong> was the cemetery of the old city Aiboshim, it has 50 000 square meters and 3500 preserved tombs, and it is considered the biggest one in the word.<\/p>\n

Finally, the Posidonia prairies<\/strong>, only to be found in the Mediterranean Sea<\/strong>, have an incredible biological value and huge extension. In fact, the most extensive Posidonia prairie of the world is to be found between Ibiza <\/strong>and Formentera<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The story of Ibiza and Formentera<\/a> <\/strong>goes back to the second half of the 7th century B.C., when the Phoenicians settled in the village of Sa Cal<\/strong>e<\/strong>ta<\/strong> and later in the area of Dalt Vila<\/strong> and called the island Ibosim <\/strong>(Land of \u201cBes\u201d<\/strong>– one of their gods). Seven centuries later, Ibiza became part of the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n

After the Byzantines,<\/strong> the Arabs<\/strong> occupied the island in the beginning of the 8th century, becoming \u201cYabisah\u201d. Finally, the 8th of August of 1235 Guillem de Montgr\u00ed<\/strong>, Pere de Portugal<\/strong> and Nun\u00f3 San\u00e7<\/strong> conquered the island for the Catalan-Aragon Kingdom<\/strong>. Nowadays, this culture is still alive and enriched by a special cultural sedimentation, which is unique in the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
